Bengali Wedding Banquet Platter Just Got Bigger

The wedding season is in full swing. Bengali families who are marrying their daughters and sons off to their chosen grooms and brides have gotten busy with what they do the best- finalising menu plans with the best wedding caterers in Kolkata. If you have been lucky enough to attend a wedding dinner recently you must have noticed that it is no longer only about the fish fries and bhetki paturi and kochi pathar jhol. The Bong wedding banquet platter has redefined OTT and has grown bigger in size and more diverse than you could ever imagine.

Think about a Bengali wedding ceremony back in 2010. What would you have expected to be there on a not-so-humble dinner menu? – Some chicken pakoda and paneer pakoda for starters accompanied by tea and/or coffee as hot beverage and aam panna or orange squash as cold beverage. Cut to main course-buffet counters would be there serving one of the variants of puri (luchi) or lachha paratha or naan from the bread section followed by chhole or dal makhani, fish fry, pulao or biryani, a spicy preparation of chicken or mutton, chatni, papad, rasgulla (or roshogolla), a sandesh, and finally a scoop of humble vanilla or two-in-one ice cream or kulfi to end on a sweet note.

And yes, who would forget the almost constant paan counter at the corner serving the flavourful after-meal treat wrapped in a glistening betel leaf!

Even the best wedding caterer in Kolkata at that time would serve this menu again and again with little or no innovation and no one seemed to complain.
